Get help immediately if someone

  • Has harmed themselves or is talking about ending their life
  • Is threatening to harm someone else
  • Is confused, hearing or seeing things others do not, and cannot keep themselves safe
  • Has taken an overdose or a harmful substance
  • Is in a situation where they are not safe from another person
  • Seems to you to be at risk, even if you are not sure

While you get help

  1. Stay with them if it is safe

Keep the person company and keep talking calmly. Do not leave them alone if you believe they may act on thoughts of harm.

  2. Remove obvious dangers

If you can do so safely, move medicines, sharp objects or other means of harm out of reach.

  3. Get to emergency care

Call for an ambulance or take the person to the nearest hospital. Bring any medication they have taken.
